Keynote Speaker: Debra Cartlidge
The Deaf Village North West
Multi-award winning, Debra Cartlidge joins us to share her aspirations for creating a space that brings hearing and Deaf communities together in nature. The Deaf Village is a Deaf-Led organisation that promotes inclusivity at its core. Carrying a true message of triumph over adversity, Debra continues to challenge assumptions over deafness and educational achievements.
The Deaf Village strives to, develop, maintain, operate and manage a number of services that are inclusive within the local community and the wider boroughs. Now comprising an ever-expanding specialised Deaf staff team, community outreach service, specialist hybrid residential placements and, in more recent years, the Deaf Village Academy. By actively encouraging community to bridge the distance between hearing and D/deaf worlds, their aim is to create a vibrant outdoor space where our communities can come together in shared endeavours. With a highly-unique approach to education, her team work with individuals with a wide range of abilities, firmly-rooted in the Deaf cultural approach to pedagogy and inclusion.
During the presentation Debra and her team will draw on the experiences of some of the Deaf young people who access The Deaf Village and explore how we, as QToDs can encourage deaf CYP and their families can get involved.
