NatSIP is pleased to announce that booking is now open for this free workshop for parents.
Supported by NatSIP and hosted by Wandsworth Sensory Support Service and Linden Lodge School, this workshop is for parents of young people aged 16-25 who have significant learning difficulties and who are attending an educational placement. It is also suitable for parents of young people aged 14 years+ who are planning for their young people when they reach their 16th birthday.
What will I get from this workshop?
The Mental Capacity Act 2005 states that from their 16th birthday, all young people can make their own decisions about their education, health and social care, and it is expected that they will do so. The Act states that a young person’s special educational needs, diagnosis, age or behaviour are not reasons a young person can be considered unable to make their own decision.
The Act applies to parents as well as education, health and social care professionals.
This workshop explains and explores:
- The Mental Capacity Act 2005
- The legal definitions of capacity, lacking capacity, and how it is decided if a young person lacks capacity to make a particular decision.
- If a young person is deemed to lack capacity to make a decision about their education then it is normally their parents who will make this decision on their behalf, using Act’s ‘best interests’ checklist. The workshop will cover the checklist and provide guidance about how to use it
- How to encourage and support young people’s ability to make their own decisions.
Who is leading the workshop?
The workshop leader will be Jane Sinson, an HCPC registered educational psychologist, the author of Applying the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in Education: A Practical Guide for Education Professionals,
published by Jessica Kingsley in 2016. Jane led the development of NatSIP’s materials and training on the Mental Capacity Act, and has worked as a local authority educational psychologist for 20 years, prior to which she worked as a special needs teacher in a range of mainstream, resourced and special schools.
Cost:
The workshop is free, but places are limited and must be booked in advance.
