Are you interested in achieving a level 3 qualification which enables you to take specialist notes in an educational setting? This course is a LASER award and has been approved by the Department for Education for inclusion on the Non-Medical Helper (NMH) Qualifications Framework for supporting DSA-funded students in higher education.
The course is aimed at those who want to gain skills and knowledge in supporting deaf or hard of hearing learners through specialist notetaking (manual or electronic). Candidates must be minimum 18 years old with a GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths to register for this course.
The course will be delivered by qualified specialist practitioners from the Physical & Sensory Support F/HE 16+ team and will run on site from Tuesday 31st August 2021 to Friday September 3rd 2021 from 9.30am – 4.30pm (6 teaching hours per day). There will be an additional assessment and tutorial day arranged when candidates have built up their notetaking experience, later in the year.
To achieve the full Level 3 qualification, candidates must be successful in both units covered in this course:
WJF900: ‘Notetaking skills for support staff working with sensory impaired learners’ – level 2 (CORE UNIT)
WJF902: ‘Notetaking skills for support staff working with deaf and hard of hearing learners’ – level 3

Cost of course: £790.00 per person (this includes the 4 teaching days and 1 assessment/tutorial day, plus registration fees).
There will also be guided learning hours (self-study) and ongoing feedback tutorials from course tutors which can be arranged remotely. The qualification will be assessed by the centre (PSS) and subject to LASER‘s requirements for quality assurance and primarily through the development of a portfolio of evidence of notetaking practice and assignments to meet the assessment criteria outlined in the tasks.
Portfolio submission dates: end of December (level 2 – unit WJF900), end of March (level 3 – unit WJF902). Final submission deadline: end of May 2022.
It is important that candidates have a professional in their establishment who can also evidence their notetaking working practice with Deaf / Hard of Hearing students and access to opportunities for notetaking for deaf/hard of hearing people.
